The Domestic Violence Think-In Urges the Public to Pay their Work Forward

In August, The International Rescue Committee, gyro and Hyper Island launched the collaborative social media project, The Domestic Violence Think-In. Nearly 450 students at Hyper Island gathered for four days in Sweden to create ideas for how to raise awareness about a neglected humanitarian crisis: domestic violence in developing countries.

The project yielded dozens of remarkable ideas, rough cut proposals, which are now released on http://ircthinkin.com/ for the world to see, involve and take action on. A number of the ideas are also currently being considered for development for an upcoming IRC campaigns.

The caliber of talent and ideas was inspiring,” said Carrie Welch, senior vice president of the IRC.  Each of the videos is a creative idea explained, and we encourage the public to get involved by viewing and sharing the students' work. Spreading the word about domestic violence is a first step to stopping it. We also have our own plans on moving forward with some of the Hyper Island thinking to raise awareness to domestic violence of developing countries in some innovative ways."

“We think it is everyone’s responsibility to take action with what they can – and we're proud of being able to contribute with the assets of our organization, which are our creative students. Now, the IRC already have 450 strong ambassadors taking stand against domestic violence, and we hope to spread that further out through our networks. We really don't see it stopping here,” said Johanna Frelin, CEO at Hyper Island.

Christoph Becker, ceo+cco, gyro, said, “The impossible can be made possible. These students proved it. For four days, these 450 minds were united for one cause. It was a inspiring experience for an important organization and proof that collaboration leads to greatness.”

Here is what happened at the Domestic Violence Think-In:

The students, from 31 countries, were tasked with generating ideas to raise awareness and donations for the important and often overlooked issue. The session was led by Hyper Island and the global ideas shop gyro. Nearly 70 ideas were presented to bring awareness to the human rights issue. The videos can be found at the Domestic Violence Think-In website, ircthinkin.com.
